National teams carry different stakes

National-team titles compress a sport into a few weeks, with squads assembled for the occasion rather than built across a season. In 2025 that produced a penalty shoot-out final in Basel, a Nations League final decided from the spot in Munich, and rugby and cricket titles won on very different stages.

The Women's EURO final was won on penalties

UEFA Women's EURO 2025 was staged in Switzerland with 16 teams in four groups of four, the top two from each group advancing to the quarter-finals. England arrived as defending champions after winning in 2022 at Wembley, and Spain arrived as world champions after the 2023 Women's World Cup.

The final at St. Jakob-Park in Basel finished 1–1 after extra time, and England won the shoot-out 3–1. Their route shows how knockout football both punishes and forgives.

  1. Group stage. England opened with a defeat by France, then recovered to reach the quarter-finals.
  2. Quarter-final. They trailed Sweden and won on penalties after a 2–2 draw.
  3. Semi-final. They beat Italy 2–1 in extra time after a late equaliser.
  4. Final. A 1–1 draw with Spain, then a 3–1 shoot-out win.

Regional prizes follow their own logic

The UEFA Nations League, first played in 2018–19, links qualifying and competitive fixtures, and its finals weekend produces a champion from four semi-finalists. In 2025 Portugal beat Spain on penalties in the final in Munich after a 2–2 draw.

In North America, the Concacaf Gold Cup brought Mexico a 2–1 win over the United States in the final in Houston. The Gold Cup is the championship of the Concacaf region, and its field has at times included guest teams from outside the confederation, a reminder that an invitation is a different route from qualification.

The Lions are not a national team in the usual sense, which is why a series win there sits beside, not inside, the World Cup tradition. The Champions Trophy was hosted by Pakistan, but India's matches, including the final, were played in Dubai, an arrangement that shows how scheduling can shape a tournament's geography.

How nations earn a place

Host berth
Host nations often qualify automatically, as Switzerland did for the Women's EURO.
Qualifying competition
Most teams reach a major tournament by finishing high in a qualifying group or winning a play-off.
League standing
The Nations League finals draw on group winners from the top division.
Invitation
Some regional events add guest nations, which gives the field a different character from a purely qualified one.

Why "upset" sits awkwardly with national teams

National squads meet only in international windows, train together for days and depend on which players are available. Rankings therefore predict less than they do for clubs, and a shoot-out can erase a gap in quality. England's EURO title came through two shoot-outs and an extra-time win, which says as much about resilience as about margin.

The practical reading is simple: treat a national-team title as a verdict on one tournament, not on a long period of dominance.
