A season title asks a different question from a one-off cup: who was best over months, or who survived a bracket built at the end of them? 2025 offered both answers, from Liverpool's league-table win to Philadelphia's Super Bowl and Oklahoma City's seven-game Finals.
Football leagues reward the whole season
In a round-robin league every club plays every other home and away, and the table decides everything. There is no bracket to slip through, so a title usually belongs to the squad with the most depth.

Liverpool's title was the club's 20th in the English top flight, level with Manchester United's record. Bayern Munich regained the Bundesliga after Bayer Leverkusen's unbeaten title the season before, a reminder that even a long table can change hands.
Playoff leagues end in a bracket
The NBA plays an 82-game regular season, then a play-in round and four best-of-seven playoff rounds. A seven-game series favours the deeper side because luck evens out over several games. The Oklahoma City Thunder beat the Indiana Pacers 4–3 in the NBA Finals, with the deciding game played in Oklahoma City, giving the franchise its first title in that city. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was named Finals MVP.
The Pacers, the less-fancied side, pushed the series to a seventh game. Even a favourite can be taken to the edge when a series runs that long.
Super Bowl LIX: a bracket that ends in one game
The NFL's route is shorter and harsher than the NBA's, because every playoff round is a single game.
- Regular season. Seventeen games per team.
- Wild-card round. Seven teams per conference qualify for the playoffs.
- Divisional round. Single games, no second chance.
- Conference championships. One winner from each conference.
- Super Bowl. One game between the two conference winners.
The Philadelphia Eagles beat the Kansas City Chiefs 40–22 at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, ending Kansas City's attempt to win three straight titles. Jalen Hurts was named most valuable player. A single-game final is the most volatile format on this page, which is why a dominant run can end in one night.
Franchise cricket adds a league stage and a final
The Indian Premier League, founded in 2008, is a franchise tournament: a league stage, then playoffs and a final. Royal Challengers Bengaluru won the 2025 title, their first, beating Punjab Kings in the final in Ahmedabad after losing earlier finals. A first title after a long wait carries a different meaning from a repeat win, even when the trophy is the same.
